Journals

Several high school students still have to pass the TAKS test so we still have the TAKS Journals on this wwebsite.  We currently have Journals for 10th and Exit Science (TAKS) as we as Exit Math (TAKS).  We will be offering Journals at other grade levels.  Those are currently in the works.

Each Math Journal is available in a Student Edition and a Teacher Edition.

Each Journal will provide teachers with the opportunity to model the thinking required to solve the same level of math problems as students are presented on the test.

As teachers model critical reading and the analysis of information on the overhead, the Journals enable students to engage in discussion of the problem, take notes in the provided area, and to show their step-by-step process.

Thus, they work through the teacher guided process necessary to think critically in order to solve the strategy, as well as, strategies other students may suggest during the class discussion.

The "Sample for Analysis” pages present a test formatted problem with a strategy to solve the problem. These pages span every type of problem presented to students on past tests.

An "Instructional Curriculum” page accompanies each "Sample for Analysis” page in the Teacher Edition and it contains the following:

• The associated TEKS/TAKS are listed to tie the type of problem to the TEKS which are being assessed on the test.
• Prerequisite skills are listed in order to understand the foundation of understanding that might need to be engaged.
• An error analysis for each wrong answer is stated to assist the teacher in understanding the route the student is taking in their understanding of the process.
• The level of questioning format is identified, knowledge or application or problem solving, to understand the depth of the questioning.
• In the Student Edition, there is a place for the students to take notes and a place to show their work as the teacher presents the strategy on the overhead.
