Step Up to the TAKS Science Series assessment component is called the Assessment Book.There are short summaries of the TEKS in each objective before the assessments. The summaries can be used to review the concepts while the assessments can be used as a pretest and post-test or as a check-point to determine student mastery. These assessments can also be used a couple of weeks before the TAKS test to determine areas that are needed for further review.

For benchmarking purposes, teachers can utilize the assessments as a cumulative assessment and the benchmarks as a summative assessment for mastery.
